Penn State’s Mauti says he still has a long way to go

August 29

Penn State linebacker Michael Mauti has received a lot of national accolades before even hitting an opponent with malice in the 2011 football season. He has been termed a “player to watch” in the Big Ten, and is on the watch lists for the Butkus Award and the Nagurski Trophy.  As for his reaction to all this attention, Mauti, you might say, is overwhelmingly underwhelmed.  “I guess it’s better to be on those lists than not,” he said.

Nittany Lions are hitting their weights

THE BIGGEST LOSER” is a television reality show about significantly overweight people who have made lifestyle changes in an effort to get smaller and, presumably, healthier.  Penn State coach Joe Paterno has long been a proponent of what might be described as the “Happy Valley Diet,” relegating players who exceed the target weights JoePa has set for them to his spacious doghouse, where offenders can expect to log more time pumping iron in the weight room and running the Beaver Stadium steps, and less time loading up their trays at the training table.

Addazio looks to take Temple football to next step – a title

August 29

The rebuilding is over. The building continues.  Former coach Al Golden left Temple with a bowl appearance in 2009, 17 wins the past two seasons, and the program in the hands of Steve Addazio. Now the animated former Florida assistant, who under head coach Urban Meyer helped the Gators win two BCS national championships, looks to take the Owls further than his predecessor.  Temple senior Chester Stewart will compete for the starting quarterback role with junior Mike Gerardi and sophomore Chris Coyer. Stewart started the first seven games last season but completed just 53.3 percent (72 for 135) of his passes.  The Owls are coming off back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in 30 years, but they have yet to play in a Mid-American Conference championship game.
