“Sure-handed wideout Jason Avant made a most unusual request after Sunday morning’s practice.
He tried to convince reporters that cornerback Joselio Hanson had stripped the ball away from him during a full-team, red-zone drill even though it appeared Avant dropped the pass.
In essence, Avant asked for an incomplete pass to be considered a fumble — a more egregious outcome.
“I caught it at the beginning,” Avant pleaded.
Normally, a dropped pass during another mundane practice wouldn’t register a blip on the storyline scale.
But Avant’s penchant for catching everything became a hot topic last week when anally retentive offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg informed reporters that his fifth-year receiver had caught all 80 catchable passes during competitive drills without dropping one.
Avant, thankfully, rolled his eyes and said he wasn’t losing sleep over training-camp reception streaks.”
