The discussion happened Sunday. On Tuesday, Bell cleared the air. After injuring his hamstring three days into full-team practice, which sent him to the sidelines for a few days, Bell just wanted his coach to know he’s not milking an injury.
“We were just talking about it because I’m really passionate about the sport, you know what I mean? And I feel bad because I wasn’t helping them, so I just wanted to ensure him I’m doing whatever it takes for me to get back,” Bell said after practice.
“So that’s probably why it looked so animated, because I’m just so passionate about football. I mean, I hate not being out there.”
Bell played a total of nine games in 2007 and 2008 and missed three games last year with New Orleans from a knee injury he sustained in the Saints’ Week 2 win against the Eagles.
Being new in town, and playing under a one-year contract that isn’t guaranteed, Bell had hoped to show his new employer that he’s more reliable and durable than his track record suggests.
“I just wanted to assure them,” he said. “I don’t know what my reputation is. I’ve been on a couple of teams. I don’t want them to think that this is a habit of mine. I don’t want them to think this is what I’m made of — get injured and then work on my own schedule.”
Bell rejoined practice Tuesday and participated in some of the live sessions before going back to the locker room for treatment.
Asked if he expected to play in Friday’s exhibition opener against Jacksonville, Bell said, “I hope so.””
