Well, it sounds like DeSean Jackson won’t be taking a stand in his contract holdout after all. Multiple sources are now reporting that DeSean will report to camp on Monday, August 8.
That’s a full day ahead of the August 9 deadline for him to gain credit for a year of service toward unrestricted free agency.
The Eagles have said they won’t negotiate with a holdout so with DeSean showing up the process of agreeing on a new deal can finally get underway. Of course, that doesn’t mean DeSean will immediately start catching passes over the middle in full pad drills. He’s going to want some kind of protection against injury, either from the Eagles or through his own actions, so it’s likely he’ll be chasing Jeremy Maclin around on the side fields. It may not really be practicing but it’s not holding out either.
Ultimately, it’s on the Eagles to play ball and offer the money Jackson deserves, but he and agent Drew Rosenhaus also need to temper their expectations and not demand that DeSean be the highest paid wideout in football.
Either way, pay the man. It would be ridiculous for the Eagles to shower cash on all these free agents but not take care of their own. They need to make it happen. Common sense says they will, and hopefully soon. The regular season is just barely over a month away.
