Panthers could use CB Samuel
July 31 Charlotte Observer
Philadelphia has a surplus of shut-down, cover cornerbacks. The Panthers need one. And if the Eagles decide to make Asante Samuel available, the Panthers would be interested in the Pro Bowl corner, a league source said Saturday. But Samuel’s big contract would be a stumbling block in a potential trade with the Panthers, who committed more than $272 million last week to five of their core players, rookie quarterback Cam Newton and a couple of new additions.
July 31 Allentown Morning Call
No Danny Watkins (unsigned) and no Winston Justice (PUP list) has meant lots of work with the first team in Eagles training camp for offensive lineman Mike McGlynn, who competently stepped in as the starting center last year when Jamaal Jackson went down with a season-ending triceps injury on opening day. McGlynn is a player the Eagles feel can handle either of the guard positions as well. He feels he can play tackle too. Suffice it to say, this could be a big year for McGlynn, who moves closer to a starting spot again with every minute Watkins, their first-round pick in this year’s NFL Draft, remains without a contract and thus is prohibited by league rules from reporting to camp.

Just before 10 a.m. Saturday morning at Lehigh, a shout from a fan interrupted the routine drills occurring on the field in front of him. “Yo, Vince!” the barking voice called. Heads turned in anticipation and chatter rustled from the stands. Along the sideline strolled former national champion Vince Young, who greeted his on-looking admirers by spreading his index and pinky fingers into his alma mater’s signature “Hook ’em Horns” gesture. His contract with the Eagles freshly inked, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound quarterback wore not a helmet, but a green-and-white visor along with the customary red quarterback jersey, No. 9 displayed on each side but no name printed on his back.

Those first 24 agonizing hours went by without a move. Silence. Nothing but silence. No signings. No trades. No activity whatsover. Not a whisper. What the heck is going on up there on the second floor of the NovaCare Complex? What about that aggressive plan Joe Banner had promised? What about all the players the Eagles were supposed to bring in? What about the Kevin Kolb trade? Nothing.
July 31 Camden Courier-Post
Michael Vick said the text message came Friday evening from his brother, saying that the Eagles had just signed Nnamdi Asomugha to a free agent contract. Vick didn’t believe it. Vick got back to his dorm room at Lehigh University and turned on the TV. Once Vick confirmed the news, he was in awe. “I was like, “They’re at it again,’ ” Vick said. “It’s crazy. It’s awesome.”
