McCoy proving to be clutch when it matters most

September 13 CSN Philly columnist Reuben Frank

LeSean McCoy was asked Sunday night if he felt like the fourth quarter was “his” quarter.  His time to shine.  “I really don’t feel that way,” he said. “Fourth quarter, I just feel like it’s our quarter as a team.” The facts say otherwise. McCoy’s 49-yard clinching touchdown run in the fourth quarter against the Rams Sunday was his fourth career touchdown run of at least 40 yards — and all four have been in the fourth quarter.

Line ignites Eagles

In many ways, everything the Eagles are trying to do on defense emanates from the line. That is especially true for limiting the opponent’s passing game.  That’s why the Eagles were encouraged after sacking St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford five times Sunday while preventing him from throwing a touchdown pass in their 31-13 win.  That seldom happened last season.

Rookie LB Matthews progresses in first start

The Great Casey Matthews Experiment survived Week 1.  Matthews made his NFL debut in the Eagles’ 31-13 win over the Rams Sunday in St. Louis, becoming the first Eagle linebacker to start on opening day of his rookie year in 25 years — since Alonzo Johnson started the 1986 opener against the Redskins at right outside linebacker.  Just like the defense’s performance overall, Matthews’s first start was uneven but — encouragingly — improved as the game went on.

LBs know they must improve

On his way to film review Monday at the NovaCare Complex, Casey Matthews stopped to talk about his professional debut.  He didn’t need to see replays of the Eagles’ 31-13 win over the Rams to know that linebackers didn’t make the greatest first impression. Running back Steven Jackson bolted untouched 47 yards for a touchdown on the Rams’ first play from scrimmage.  “It was just a little cutback, just miscommunication from where the safety was coming down,” Matthews said.
