Patterson, Maclin happy to be back

August 21 Courier-Post

The ailments were very different, but the fears were the same.  Both Eagles defensive tackle Mike Patterson and receiver Jeremy Maclin were dealing with potential life-threatening situations that at the very least could have ended their football careers.  So it was easy to imagine their relief, not to mention their elation, when they returned to the team Saturday. Both expect to be ready for the start of the season Sept. 11, if not sooner.

Reid sticking with Matthews at middle linebacker

August 21 CSN Philly

Another week closer to opening day and still no plans to make a move at middle linebacker.  Head coach Andy Reid told Saturday rookie Casey Matthews will take all the reps with the first defense at middle linebacker in the coming week and will start against the Browns Thursday night.  Reid said he has no plans to remove Matthews from the starting lineup and is not considering moving Jamar Chaney from strong-side linebacker back to the middle, where he played at a high level at the end of last year.

Former ferocious Eagle ‘Wildman’ Willey dies at 83

August 21 CSN Philly

Norm Willey, a star defensive end with the Eagles in the 1950s, died on Thursday. He was 83.  Nicknamed “Wildman,” Willey was a ferocious pass rusher who earned Pro Bowl honors three years in a row, 1953-55. It is hard to document Willey’s career because quarterback sacks did not become an official statistic until 1982, but Willey estimates he averaged 20 sacks per season. No one who saw him play disputes that figure.

Right tackle spot remains unsettled for Eagles

August 21 CSN Philly

The most unsettled position on the Eagles just got a little more unsettled.  Head coach Andy Reid said Winston Justice, the starter at right tackle in 2009 and 2010, is still experiencing pain around his surgically repaired left knee and is still a ways away from returning to practice. Justice underwent two knee procedures during the off-season after being hobbled during the second half of last year.  Now what?
