Eagles Notes: Reid sets playing time; Wilson signs

August 9 CSN Philly columnist: Reuben Frank

Andy Reid said on his WIP radio show Monday night that he plans to let the first-team offense and defense play the first quarter Thursday night in the preseason opener against the Ravens at the Linc. The second team will play the second quarter and into the third quarter, and then everybody else will finish out the game.  “They’re all going to have an opportunity to play,” he said.  Reid also indicated that Mike Patterson, diagnosed with a brain AVM last week, is not on the brink of returning to activity, no matter what his agent is saying.  “He’s going to be out for a while here,” Reid said.

Nate Allen’s rehab was a mental challenge

August 9 LehighValleyLive.com

Nate Allen had to be careful.  The Philadelphia Eagles’ safety’s impressive rookie season had come to an end Dec. 19 when he left the game with the New York Giants after tearing the patellar tendon in his right knee. Surgery followed.  “I feel good now but the rehab was really tough,” said the Eagles’ second-round pick in 2010 after Monday morning’s practice session at training camp at Lehigh University. “It was a big mental thing for me — I had to be careful not to push too much. I had to hold myself back. I’ve been a hard worker my whole career but I had to be smart about the rehab and take it easy.”

Eagles’ Lewis follows McCoy yet again

August 9 Allentown Morning Call

When Eagles running back LeSean “Shady” McCoy left the University of Pittsburgh after the 2008 season, nobody knew how much time would pass before the program saw an equally dynamic presence in the backfield.  A freshman tailback by the name of Dion Lewis burst on to the scene the very next year, and it wasn’t long before Pitt fans began wearing “Shady Who?” T-shirts to home games at Heinz Field.

VY’s path to stardom takes detour

August 9 Houston Chronicle columnist Jerome Solomon

Vince Young expects to be a star in the NFL.  He would like to be on the field, leading his team to touchdowns and winning football games.  In short, he wants to do what he has always done: be VY.  For now, though, VY being VY has been put on hold while Vince learns a new system.  Released by the Tennessee Titans despite much on-the-field success in his five-year career, Young, 28, is slated to be the backup to the Eagles’ Michael Vick on one of the most talked about teams in the NFL.

Vermeil believes new CBA will benefit Eagles

August 9 CSN Philly columnist: Ray Didinger

Dick Vermeil paid a visit to the Eagles’ training camp on Monday. But in Vermeil’s eyes, it is now more camp than training. Shorter practices, less contact, no pads in the afternoon. That’s the new NFL.  Vermeil understands those are the rules of the new collective bargaining agreement, but as a man who coached 14 years in the league and built winning teams through hard work and notoriously tough training camps, this is a strange new world.
