Saturday training camp notebook

August 7 CSN Philly

Every year, there’s one practice, one point, usually about 10 to 14 days in, where all of a sudden, a bunch of players suddenly start to resemble a team.  Everybody can sense it — fans, coaches, players. Guys are starting to get used to the system and their new coaches and teammates. One side of the ball raises its level of play, and then so does the other side of the ball. Guys on both units start making great plays.  Next thing you know, you’re watching something special.  Saturday was one of those days.

15 observations at Eagles’ camp

August 7 Camden Courier-Post

After the first full week of Eagles training camp, including Friday’s inaugural practice for free-agent signees, here are my Fast Fifteen observations from Lehigh University:  1. Players stand around a lot at practice. The new collective-bargaining agreement sure has strapped Andy Reid in as to what he can do. For example, special-teams practice is now part of the morning session, which means many of the first teamers are standing around.  2. It doesn’t matter if Michael Vick is standing around, all eyes are on him at practice — both the fans’ and players’. This might not be the Dream Team, as Vince Young called it, but it is Vick’s team.

The Birds’ books: Eagles 2011 contracts at a glance

August 7 CSN Philly

Center Mike McGlynn and defensive end Trent Cole received huge raises. Safety Marlin Jackson took a big pay cut. And wide receiver DeSean Jackson did indeed get more money — but not exactly what he’s looking for. obtained the complete set of 2011 Eagles contracts from a league source, and an examination of the numbers reveals several very interesting things:

Rookie center gets long look

August 7 Camden Courier-Post

Andy Reid supposedly ended speculation at the start of training camp when he named veteran Jamaal Jackson his starting center.  But the coach’s actions haven’t necessarily backed his words lately because rookie Jason Kelce is splitting reps with Jackson on the first unit.  It could be that Reid and the offensive brain trust are trying to accelerate Kelce’s leaning curve in light of the lockout. Or maybe the coaches envision an impact from Kelce sooner than later.

Eagles continue camp without WRs Jackson, Maclin

August 7 CSN Philly

Day 10 at Lehigh was a lot like Days 1 through 9 at Lehigh. No DeSean. No Maclin.  The Eagles continue to operate at training camp without their two starting wide receivers, but there doesn’t seem to be much concern about their absence.  The Eagles open the preseason with a game against the Ravens Thursday night at the Linc. Their starting receivers will likely be Riley Cooper and Jason Avant, who have gotten a ton of reps with Michael Vick and the first offense while Jackson and Maclin have been absent.
