The Eagles traded for LB Antwan Barnes

by Justin Adkins

Another day, another trade for the Eagles

Barely removed from trading for Cardinals offensive guard Reggie Wells, the Eagles have made another one, this time for Ravens veterans linebacker/defensive end Antwan Barnes

Various reports say the deal was for a 2011 seventh-round pick.

Barnes, 25, is small for a 4-3 defensive end at 6-1, 250, but has freakish speed reportedly in the 4.45 range.  In 38 career games, he has 20 tackles (13 solo), five sacks, an interception, a pass break-up, a forced fumble and 24 special teams tackles.

One Eagles defender is excited about the news; from Asante Samuel’s Twitter:

“Philly Fans… Welcome my boi Antwan Barnes to Philly! If u don’t know him now, you will soon, as he is a BEAST. 8 Days til game time!!!”

Barnes’ role will probably be in the “Joker”, a standup pass rusher first put to use for the Eagles by the late Jim Johnson and the Freak, Jevon Kearse.  Barnes was an outside linebacker in Baltimore’s 3-4 defense, so rushing the passer is what he’s used to.

It will be interesting to see how Barnes’ acquisition shakes down the rest of the Eagles roster.  Do they go DE heavy?  Will a rookie LB be cut that they originally planned to keep?  We’ll know very soon.
