By Justin Adkins:
Sad news today for Eagles fans — Jets coach and Buddy’s son Rex Ryan told the New York Daily News that the former Eagles coach has cancer.
“It’s going to take more than this to get rid of him,” Rex said. “That’s what he always says.”
Rex didn’t say what type of cancer Buddy has, indicating only that it was diagnosed a couple weeks ago.
“He’s 80 years old, but he’s doing great. He’s tougher than shit,” Rex said, not letting the fact that Buddy actually turned 77 last month get in the way. “He’s had other things in his life. He overcame encephalitis. He’s overcome cancer twice. He’s tough.”
Buddy previously beat melanoma, an aggressive skin cancer; however, that’s not what he’s fighting this time.
“It’s something else. I’m not going to get into it,” Rex said. “He’s a tough old guy. He’s getting a second opinion. He should be all right.”
Unfortunately, that sounds pretty ominous. Cancer is a terrible disease that kills without prejudice. Even a defensive genius like Buddy can’t scheme against it forever.
For an Eagles fan growing up in the 80’s, Buddy was a larger than life figure who was easy to love. He talked tough, his teams backed that up on the field, and he hated the Cowboys.
Good luck Coach, your fans are pulling for you.
