The Eagles need a defensive end — badly — and one of the most popular rumors in the lead up to free agency has been the possible return of Jason Babin.
It wasn’t a real stretch of a rumor, of course. Babin has said publicly he wouldn’t mind playing again for the Eagles and their new defensive line coach, Jim Washburn, the same man who helped Babin put up 12.5 sacks with the Titans this past season.
And with free agent talk coming fast and furious, Babin to the Eagles is sounding more and more likely.
This evening on 97.5 the Fanatic, respected NFL reporter Adam Caplan was pretty clear on where he thought Babin would soon be — Philadelphia. Caplan thinks that Babin could agree to a deal with the Eagles as soon as Thursday.
Another team thought to be interested in Babin, the Chicago Bears, is said to be backing off, per the Chicago Sun-Times’ Sean Jensen. The reason? Jensen says the Bears are being outbid by the Eagles.
So stay tuned. The Eagles are in a bad way at the position, with Brandon Graham out for at least a big chunk of the season, maybe more, and no one else on the roster outside of Trent Cole inspires any confidence whatsoever.
The Eagles are also rumored to be pursuing the Vikings’ Ray Edwards, who is younger and probably more talented than Babin. That said, Babin may make the most sense as he’ll get less money than Edwards and could serve as a great transition piece while Graham heals up and eventually starts again his personal quest to get two sacks per game.
And the money saved on Babin over Edwards can be used to sign a linebacker or three. And a cornerback. And maybe a defensive tackle. You get the point.
