Mike McGlynn has risen from third-team to first-team center rather quickly.

Tonight, he’s hoping to show he should stay there.

McGlynn will start at center in place of Nick Cole, who continues to battle a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for tonight’s preseason opener against Jacksonville at Lincoln Financial Field.

Cole had been filling in for Jamaal Jackson, who hasn’t practiced since training camp opened July 26. Jackson, normally the starter, is coming off major knee surgery and is still in the rehab stages.

“I don’t feel pressure,” McGlynn said. “It’s just football, just going out there and playing. Practices are harder than games half the time. It’s an exciting moment, that’s all. No more pressure than any other game.”

One of the center’s biggest responsibilities is calling out the defense’s coverage and making sure the rest of the offensive line is in sync. McGlynn, who had been practicing mostly at guard before moving to center, said he’s become more comfortable in the leadership role throughout the week.

Both quarterback Kevin Kolb and head coach Andy Reid had high praise for the offensive rhythm in camp for the past few days after some spotty efforts earlier.

“We haven’t missed a beat with me being in there,” McGlynn said, “and that’s a good sign.””
