October 9 Camden Courier-Post:
“The Eagles defense you’ll see Sunday night on national television against the 49ers isn’t the one you’ve seen for the first four games.
Asante Samuel didn’t travel with the team Friday on its flight to the Bay Area after a setback in his concussion recovery forced the team to nix the Pro Bowl cornerback from the active roster, coach Andy Reid said after Friday’s practice.
Samuel “feels great,” Reid said, but didn’t clear enough tests at the NovaCare Complex to seek the NFL-mandated second opinion from an independent neurologist.
Reid also said Juqua Parker would start at left defensive end over rookie Brandon Graham, the second lineup change of the week on defense. Moise Fokou had supplanted Akeem Jordan at strong-side linebacker.
Joselio Hanson will take Samuel’s place at right cornerback, although he’ll move inside in the nickel to take his customary place in the slot to make room for Dimitri Patterson on the outside.
That makes three new starters for Sean McDermott’s defense, which is hoping to avoid a repeat of the gashing delivered last Sunday by the Redskins, who rolled up 169 rushing yards in their 17-12 win.
“I don’t feel any pressure,” said Hanson, who should see plenty of snaps against two of the Niners’ three top offensive weapons — wideout Michael Crabtree and Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis.
“I’m just going out there and play a game that I’ve played all my life. I love playing on national TV too, so that should be real fun.””
