December 5 Camden Courier-Post:
“Shift after agonizing shift, the Devils tried lulling the Flyers and their fans to sleep with their repetitive dump and chase game.
Then Mike Richards would jump over the boards like a bat out of hell, knocking Ilya Kovalchuck off his skates with thunderous body checks, disrupting the sight lines of Johan Hedberg, sliding to block shots and leaving Jamie Langenbrunner with a mouthful of bloody chiclets.
“Mike’s been excellent,” Flyers coach Peter Laviolette said after watching Richards score one goal and set up another in a 5-3 win over the Devils in front of a sellout crowd of 19,657 at the Wells Fargo Center. “In times when you’ve lost a few and you need to get a win, you look for your captain to step up and have a big game, and he did.”
Asked if he thought Richards’ teammates noticed the performance of their captain, Laviolette quipped, “I don’t know how they could miss it.”
The Flyers overwhelmed the Devils with third-period goals by Richards, Danny Briere and Carter to snap their losing streak at three and move back into the Atlantic Division lead with 66 points. Despite holding two one-goal leads, the Devils lost for the 16th time this season and now have the most losses in the NHL.
Richards got the ball rolling 3:32 into the third when he cleanly beat Travis Zajac on a faceoff, drove to the net and redirected a Chris Pronger one-timer past Hedberg for a 3-2 lead.”
