September 19 Camden Courier-Post:
“Maybe it was the enticing weather, the interactive games or the fact they came within two victories of hoisting the Stanley Cup last June.
Whatever the reasons, a crowd of close to 2,000 fans — believed to be the largest ever for the start of training camp — jammed the Skate Zone on Saturday as the Flyers embarked on their 44th NHL season.
“I really think we’re going all the way this year,” said Williamstown’s Megan Grim, a 22-year-old student at West Chester University who showed her affection for Flyers captain Mike Richards with a hand-made sign. “But really, I’m here for Mike Richards because he’s gorgeous.”
Scott and Lisa Collins of Clayton were equally optimistic. They dressed their sons Ayden, 2, and Brandon, 4 months, in their Flyers‘ gear for Saturday’s double-session practice. The Flyers open their eight-game preseason schedule Tuesday night at home against the Devils and begin the regular season Oct. 7 in Pittsburgh against the Penguins.
“I like the changes they made,”‘ Scott Collins, 31, said. “Besides losing (Simon) Gagne.”
Of the 20 players who dressed for Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals last June, only three — Gagne, Arron Asham and Lukas Krajicek — are not on the Flyers’ training camp roster. Gagne was dealt to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defenseman Matt Walker, Asham was signed by the Penguins and Krajicek is an unsigned free agent.
The Flyers bolstered their blue line with the additions of Andrej Meszaros, Sean O’Donnell and Walker and strengthened their forward position by signing free agents Nikolai Zherdev, Bill Guerin and Jody Shelley.”
