A day after recalling defenseman Erik Gustafsson from the Phantoms, the Flyers have made another move to bolster their defensive depth, pickup up 32 year-old Nick Boynton off waivers from the Chicago Blackhawks.
Boynton, 6-1, 218 lbs, will help bolster a unit dealing with multiple injury concerns, from the hopefully minor wrist trouble of Chris Pronger to Sean O’Donnell’s balky knee to Oskars Bartulis’ season-ending shoulder injury.
For the season, Boynton has a goal and seven assists with a +/- rating of 2. Since entering the NHL in 1999, he has 34 goals and 110 assists with a +/- rating of 22.
The veteran won a Stanley Cup last year when the Blackhawks beat the Flyers. He appeared in three Cup games after playing in only seven for Chicago during the season.
Per Bob McKenzie’s Twitter, to make room on the roster the Flyers will temporarily assign James Van Riemsdyk to the Phantoms.
