September 27 Philadelphia Inquirer:
“So much for Sunday being an uneventful off day.
Flyers goaltender Michael Leighton underwent an MRI exam and several Flyers hopefuls were released during the team’s first off day of the preseason.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren did not say much about Leighton.
“We are awaiting the results,” Holmgren said in a text message. “We will know more tomorrow.”
The team’s No. 1 goaltender aggravated a lower-back strain Friday in a 4-3 shoot-out victory against the Maple Leafs in Toronto.
The 29-year-old, who signed a two-year, $3.1 million contract on June 30, strained his back while working out over the summer.
Bothered by the injury, Leighton was yanked after 65 minutes against the Leafs and replaced by backup Brian Boucher for the shoot-out.
Boucher is expected to take over for Leighton, assuming he is unable to compete.”
