Flyers sign Bryzgalov to 9-year, $51 million deal

June 24 CSN Philly:

Really, it was only a matter of time.  After days of rumors, reports and denials, the Flyers have finally inked goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov to a nine-year deal worth $51 million.  “Ilya is one of the top, upper-echelon goalies in the league,” general manager Paul Holmgren said. “In bringing him in, he does give us stability. We still have young guys we think a world of who can grow with our team. We’ll see how that goes. By adding Ilya and maintaining the defense we had last year, we think we’re in a good spot.”

Flyers trade Carter & Richards in ‘tough’ decision

June 24 CSN Philly:

Paul Holmgren choked up. Not once. Not twice. But three times.  The man who scouted the Flyers’ two, young franchise faces – Mike Richards and Jeff Carter — then signed them to what amounted to lifetime deals, had done the unthinkable.  Within a one hour span, Holmgren shocked the City of Philadelphia, and the NHL on the eve of the league’s draft, by trading both players, who were 2003 first-round draft picks.

Flyers ‘change direction of organization’ by trading away Richards, Carter

June 24 Washington Times columnist Stephen Whyno:

After getting swept out of the playoffs in the Eastern Conference semifinals, everyone thought they knew what was missing from the Philadelphia Flyers. The final piece, people said, was a stud goaltender.  On Thursday, Philadelphia officially added that piece by signing Ilya Bryzgalov to a lucrative, long-term contract (nine years, $51 million). But the funny part is — that was the footnote on a whirlwind afternoon that included the Flyers dealing away their best goal-scorer and their captain and face of the franchise.

Flyers trade Richards and Carter, sign goaltender

June 24 Camden Courier-Post:

They were drafted by the Flyers on the same day, June 21, 2003. Jeff Carter was taken with the 11th pick overall and Mike Richards at No. 24.  They won a gold medal together for Canada in the 2005 World Junior Championships and later that spring sipped from the Calder Cup as rookie members of the American Hockey League’s Philadelphia Phantoms.

Pronger gets C? Richards responds

June 24 CSN Philly:

With the trade of Mike Richards to the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday, the question now becomes who will captain the Flyers this fall?  Sources say, it’s a no-brainer: Chris Pronger, who captained both St. Louis and Anaheim earlier in his career, will be offered the “C.”  General manager Paul Holmgren said given the magnitude of what went down on Thursday, the captaincy never entered his mind.
