Flyers logoIn the wake of the release of defenseman Joonas Lehtivuori, the Flyers have signed defenseman Blake Kessel to an entry-level contract.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren confirmed today that Lehtivuori cleared waivers and will be released, which opened a spot on the Flyers 50-man camp roster.  Now filling that spot is Kessel — the younger brother of Toronto Maple Leaf Phil Kessel — who was originally a sixth round pick of the New York Islanders in the 2007 draft.  However, the 22-year old has played the past three seasons with the University of New Hampshire Wildcats so this is Kessel’s first pro contract.

Kessel has been participating in the Flyers rookie camp this week and the team must like what they’ve seen.
