What started as a rumor on our own PSC Flyers Message Board has turned out to be true — the Flyers have traded for Phoenix Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
To acquire the soon-to-be free agent, the Flyers sent Phoenix minor leaguer Matt Clackson, a 2012 3rd round pick, and conditional draft pick.
Since the trade was just for negotiating rights, the Flyers have until the start of the free agency period on July 1 to make a deal or Bryzgalov becomes a free agent and the Flyers get nothing.
In 68 games with the Coyotes last season, the 30 year-old Bryzgalov was 36-20-10 with a 2.48 GAA. If signed, the Flyers have themselves a legit opening day goaltender, allowing them to develop Sergei Bobrovsky slowly. If the Flyers feel a deal can’t be reached they can always flip his rights to another team to try and recover some picks or pick up another player.
