October 18 Philadelphia Inquirer:
“The Flyers’ season is just five games old, certainly not enough time to get a good sampling of what is to follow.
Still, there has to be concern in Flyerdom, because the offense has been sporadic and, at times, listless.
Mike Richards, Scott Hartnell, Ville Leino, and James van Riemsdyk – four forwards the Flyers are counting on to combine for 80 to 100 goals this season – are goalless.
The Flyers (2-2-1) have yet to get a goal from a defenseman.
Face-offs, an underrated part of the game but the catalyst for offensive thrusts, have been a Flyers weakness. They have won just 46 percent of their draws, placing them 26th in the 30-team league heading into Sunday.
The Flyers have averaged only 2.2 goals, 23d in the NHL.
So, yes, the Flyers have a lot to work on before they resume their schedule Thursday by hosting Anaheim.
They also need to show more discipline. They entered Sunday ranked 28th in the NHL with an average of 20.6 penalty minutes. Only St. Louis (27.8) and Anaheim (33.8) had higher averages.
Because they have used so much energy killing penalties, the Flyers haven’t had much left in the tank for even-strength situations.”
