This is terrible if true. Long time Philly sports writing legend (and Baseball Hall of Famer) Bill Conlin has just “retired” from the Daily News in response to a report he is facing child sexual abuse allegations.
The news was broken by Deadspin, who cite an upcoming Inquirer article from investigative reporter Nancy Phillips.
The Philadelphia Inquirer‘s top investigative reporter, Nancy Phillips, has written a story containing what we’re told are allegations of child molestation against sportswriter Bill Conlin, a longtime columnist at the rival Daily News. Conlin resigned just moments ago, according to a source at the Daily News.
Awful. What in the hell is going on with this world? Sandusky, Fine, now Conlin. Old, creepy looking white guys are not having a good year. If these allegations prove to be true every one of them should be castrated.
UPDATE: KYW is reporting the allegations originate from the claims of multiple girls and a boy from over 40 years ago.
UPDATE 2: The Inquirer have published the story. It’s as appalling as it is damning, both for Conlin as well as the parents of the alleged victims, who pulled a Penn State and did nothing when their children shared their tear-filled complaints. And with the statute of limitations for prosecution now being exceeded, there is nothing that can be done for the alleged victims. That said, hopefully their stories will inspire others who suffered in similar ways to come forward and seek not only justice, but some measure of closure.
