The Phillies have fired hitting coach Milt Thompson. To take Thompson’s place, the Phillies have hired Greg Gross, who served in the same capacity from 2002 to 2004.
The move doesn’t come as much as a surprise, considering the recent performance of the Phillies offense, which started the season off incredibly hot but has since cooled off to a level this side of the Arctic Circle.
The Phillies have been shut out eight times this year, and been held to three runs or fewer in 46 of 95 games played.
Thompson has come under fire lately due to the Phillies terrible offensive performance. It was speculated that since Charlie Manuel, a respected hitting guru and former hitting coach himself, worked so closely with the players that Thompson was insulated internally. Apparently that is no longer the case.
Hopefully Greg Gross can figure out a way to break the once potent bear of a Phillies offense out of hibernation.
