The Phillies have placed catcher Carlos Ruiz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to April 28, his last game played.
Chooch has been day-to-day while dealing with lower back soreness, and it looks like the team has decided to give him a longer window to heal. It’s not a surprise really as back issues tend to linger and GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has recently made comments to imply that a DL stint was possible.
Ruiz has struggled a bit this season, hitting only .226 with two home runs, nine RBIs, and three doubles in 21 games. Hopefully he can come back healthy and ready to start hitting again. Or maybe he’s just waiting for October. As long as Senor Octubre is in full effect, everthing should be fine.
As Chooch heads to the DL, another player is coming off — starter Joe Blanton, who is expected to be activated Monday and pitch against the Marlins. Blanton has been out while dealing with an impingement in his elbow, which is fancy talk for soreness.
As well as Vance Worley has pitched, it’s possible the Phils are hoping Blanton can stay healthy and start auditioning for a potential deal.
