Well, that explains a lot. Per csnphilly.com’s Jim Salisbury, Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. has announced that Chase Utley has patellar tendonitis in his right knee (obnoxious grammar police here – it’s not “tendinitis”).
editor’s note: an earlier version of this story misspelled “patellar”. Not to mention the fact that the sentence describing Utley’s condition is itself grammatically weak. Karma=bitch.
When the absurd notion of “general soreness” was first perpetrated by Phils manager Charlie Manuel, most feared that this explanation was hiding a real problem. Unfortunately, it was.
Utley underwent an MRI at the request of the team, and the scan revealed the condition. Amaro doesn’t actually seem that worried though.
“We want to try to cool it down now while we have the time so it doesn’t linger all season,” Amaro said.
Utley himself says it’s not that huge a deal, that’s he’s experienced this before and could play through it if this were the regular season. While that sounds great, the usually tight-lipped and conservative Utley would probably describe a lost limb as a flesh wound.
So fingers crossed, Phillies fans. An unhealthy Utley could be a potential disaster for a lineup that can’t afford to lose any more firepower.
