Chase Utley has been cleared to return to the field after passing a second concussion test on Monday.
Utley has been out with the concussion since last Wednesday, when he hit in the head by a pitch from the Braves’ Eric O’Flaherty. After passing an initial concussion test this past Saturday, the veteran second baseman was cleared to resume light workouts. With this second test passed, Utley is able to fully resume baseball activities, though it appears he’ll be worked back in slowly.
Per Jim Salisbury, Utley may play as soon as Thursday when the Phillies take on the Florida Marlins in a doubleheader.
While a head injury is never a good thing, the one benefit here is that it gave Utley a chance to allow the rest of his body some down time. With his balky knee and history of slowing down late in the season, the down time now should hopefully allow Utley to charge up nicely for the playoffs.
