“The All-Star selections just came out, and the Phillies went from having 5 players as starters when the first returns were counted last month, to just one starter, and Chase Utley can’t even play because he’s injured. That means no starters from the Phillies.
But the Phillies do have 2 players who can _ and will _ play in the game in Roy Halladay and Ryan Howard. That means Jayson Werth didn’t make it, although there’s a chance he could still go as an injury replacement (Jason Heyward of the Braves is probably not going because of injury). Jamie Moyer didn’t make it either, and I don’t think that he should have. It’s clear that Phillies manager Charlie Manuelchose Howard (.296, 15 HR, 56 RBIs) over Joey Votto, although Votto is on the Final Vote ballot. That, of course, has sparked a lot of anger directed towards Manuel. But if the fans are smart, they’ll vote him in and it won’t be an issue anymore.
Several ex-Phillies did make it. There’s Reds reliever Arthur Rhodes and 3rd baseman Scott Rolen, Cubs OF Marlon Byrd, and Astros OF Michael Bourn. And, of course, Cliff Lee in the American League. Wouldn’t it be great if Halladay started against Lee?
