“At his locker before the game, Ryan Howard joked that perhaps a parade should be thrown in honor of his day off on Saturday. After all, they don’t come around often.
Howard had started every game this season, the only Phillie to do so, but he has struggled the past few games.
“The last three days, he’s been uncomfortable and hasn’t been seeing the ball good,” manager Charlie Manuel said. “So we’ll rest him (Saturday), play him (Sunday) and there’s an off day Monday.”
Howard said he hopes the rest will help re-energize him for the playoff run in August and September, but he said his recent slump — he’s hitless in his last 14 at-bats entering Saturday’s game with eight strikeouts — isn’t a reason for concern.”
