Utley went 0-for-3 and made an error playing second base for Single-A Clearwater on Sunday, but Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said it was “probable” that Utley would be activated from the disabled list as early as Tuesday assuming he doesn’t experience any setbacks in his third day of rehab today.
Howard is due to come off the DL on Tuesday, too, but after putting his sprained ankle through a grueling workout Saturday, the signs of an on-time return weren’t good.
“He was sore (Sunday),” Manuel said. “He did a lot of work on his ankle (Saturday), and he’s also not used to having his ankle taped. That’s something you have to get used to. When he works out real good, he was doing fine. But when he sets down, it gets sore — it can get pretty sore.”
Manuel said Howard had a noticeable limp getting off the bus after Saturday’s game, but said his first baseman is still making progress toward a return in the near future.
“Our trainer thinks that Howard’s doing real well but at the same time he also thinks that Tuesday or Wednesday could be a reach,” Manuel said. “So we’ll just have to wait and see.””
