Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said Blanton likely won’t start another game this season, with a best case scenario being a late bullpen addition.
Amaro said Blanton will undergo more tests this week to determine the extent of the damage.
The news means that trading Vance Worley becomes a little bit of a risky proposition. There’s no guarantee that Roy Oswalt will be back (though signs are encouraging as he makes his rehab start Wednesday night). And even if Oswalt comes back healthy, if Worley goes that leaves Kyle Kendrick as the likely fifth starter down the stretch. Of course, before going out in May with his elbow problems Blanton wasn’t exactly lighting the world on fire, posting a record of 1-2 with an ERA of 5.50.
Then again, if Oswalt comes back, and even if he doesn’t, the Phillies should be just fine, thanks to Mr’s Halladay, Lee, and Hamels. Use Worley to get a bat and this is absolutely a World Series team.
