 “The Phillies would love to turn back the clock to May 17, when everything seemed to be going their way.

They had just thrashed the Pirates 12-2, which followed a road sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers. They were 11 games over .500. They had a five-game lead in the NL East.

And Jimmy Rollins had just returned to the lineup after missing 30 games with a strained calf muscle. The Phillies’ everyday lineup was intact for the first time since the first week of the season.

It seemed like a formality that the Phillies would go on to win their fourth straight NL East division title and reach the World Series for the third straight season.”
