The story of the day was Domonic Brown getting his first hit followed by the news that he broke his hand. And then to add the proverbial insult to an actual injury, the Phillies lost the game to the Pittsburgh Pirates, 4-3.
Starter Roy Halladay went three scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing only one hit. The Ginger Express did give up an uncharacteristic two walks, but hey, that’s what spring training is for.
JC Ramirez, forever linked to the ill-advised Cliff Lee trade, relieved Halladay and proceeded to crap the bed, allowing five hits and four runs in three innings. Brad Lidge, Jose Contreras, and Ryan Madson closed out the game with three scoreless innings collectively.
Offensively, Ben Francisco put up a single, double, and sac fly. His spring batting average now sits at .421. With Brown’s injury, Francisco has pretty much ended any discussion of who will be starting in right field come April 1.
Spring training invitee Delwyn Young, playing second in place of gimpy-kneed Chase Utley, contributed three hits, including a double and RBI.
The Phillies are now 4-4 on the spring. Up next are the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday at 1:05pm. Be sure to follow the action in the Gameday Thread on the PSC Phillies message board.
