“Major League Baseball general managers can’t exactly sit back and relax now, but with the passing of the deadline for players to be traded without clearing waivers at 4 p.m. Saturday, they might actually be able to put down their cell phones for a few minutes.
The 2010 deadline saw a flurry of deals — some well in advance of the deadline, such as the Rangers’ acquisition of Cliff Lee, and many at the last minute, including NL East-leading Atlanta’s deal for pitcher Kyle Farnsworth and outfielder Rick Ankiel.
A number of big names moved to contenders, such as Roy Oswalt, who’s the Phillies‘ newest starter, and his longtime Houston teammate Lance Berkman, who was dealt to the Yankees. Many prospects jumped from one farm system to another.
The biggest buyers on deadline day appeared to be the Yankees and Dodgers.”
