By Justin Adkins:
Phillies ace Roy Oswalt has left the team for personal reasons, this according to several scattered reports across the internet.
No reason has been provided as of yet and the only official statement made by the Phillies is that Oswalt left for undefined personal reasons, though a team spokesperson indicated it had nothing to do with physical problems.
Various Twitter blurbs are out there saying Oswalt’s absence may be due to severe storms in Mississippi where Oswalt and his family live.
Oswalt left last night’s game after he allowed five runs on six hits with a walk and wild pitch. Asked after the game if Oswalt was possibly dealing with further back spasm issues, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel was non-committal.
“He was all right,” Manuel said. “His stuff wasn’t good. His stuff wasn’t crisp. His velocity was down. I figured there was no sense leaving him out there.”
UPDATE: the Philies have confirmed that Oswalt left due to storm and tornado activity in Mississippi. Oswalt’s parents lost their home to a tornado a year ago. No timetable has been given for his return.
Here is the official statement from the Phillies:
“There has been a tremendous amount of tornado activity near Roy’s home in Mississippi resulting in several tragic deaths and significant devastation to the area. Because of this, Roy is concerned about his family’s well-being. He has chosen to take time to make sure there wasn’t significant damage to his home, but more importantly, to make certain that his wife and children are okay.
It is almost a year to the day that his parents’ home was destroyed by a tornado which has heightened his concern about the current situation.
We are hopeful that he will rejoin the team for his next start, but will take that day by day.”
