Howard’s 3-0 swings lead Phillies to sweep of Astros

April 4 Philly.com:

“After every home game, Charlie Manuel begins his postgame news conference with a dramatic reading of the box score. It’s the only way he knows how to start; no prepared statement will be as effective as the numbers themselves, the manager reasons.

Thank you very much for sending Oswalt to Phillies

April 4 Philly.com columnist Paul Hagen:

“IT’S NOT EASY being the baseball team wearing the hard hats and putting up those “Pardon Our Dust While We Make Improvements For The Future” signs. Rebuilding always has its trying moments. Ed Wade doesn’t have to apologize for trading Roy Oswalt to the Phillies last July. The Astros’ general manager didn’t have much of a choice.

Healthy Victorino smacks RBI single

April 4 Camden Courier-Post:

“It didn’t take Shane Victorino long to prove that the calf muscle he strained during Saturday’s game was fine. Victorino didn’t start Sunday, but he pinch-hit for starter Roy Oswalt in the sixth inning, when he singled in a run in the Phillies‘ 7-3 win. Victorino stayed in the game and had to make a running catch in the center-field alley in the seventh. “I’d say he passed the test on that ball hit in the alley, wouldn’t you?” Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said.

Martinez gets start in center for Phillies, picks up first hit

April 4 Philly.com:

“Michael Martinez sat at his locker, hours away from his major-league debut as the Phillies‘ leadoff hitter in Game 3 of the 2011 season, and, well, who could have predicted that? The man who filled out the lineup card entered the room and saw Martinez idling. “What do you think?” Charlie Manuel said to his 28-year-old rookie. There was a smile but no verbal response – Martinez’s English is limited, as is Manuel’s Spanish.
