Phillies bounce back to beat Arizona 9-2

August 18 Courier-Post

PHILADELPHIA — There’s a stock answer Charlie Manuel has probably given a thousand times in his career, one that, if deployed with the right emphasis and delivery, promptly ends a debate over a failed decision.  Why did Manuel leave Roy Halladay in long enough to blow a lead and lose Tuesday’s game?  “Because I’m the manager,” Manuel said.  Most days, Manuel plays by the book, and when it doesn’t work out, he takes the heat.

Howard Downplays Hand Injury

August 18 Courier-Post columnist David Hale

Ryan Howard isn’t quite sure what happened to his right hand, but as Wednesday’s game wore on, he knew something wasn’t right.  Howard shook his hand after a sixth-inning at-bat, then chatted with team trainers in the late innings, but never left the game, even delivering an eighth-inning single, but he said the soreness in his hand never dissipated.  “It was definitely there in my last at-bat, but I was just trying to keep playing,” he said.

Hamels on track to return next week

August 19 MLB.com

Left-hander Cole Hamels is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Friday in Washington. He remains on course to rejoin the rotation next week after missing a start because of inflammation in his left shoulder.  “He’s been progressing really well,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “Cole likes to joke with me. He said, ‘Oh, it’s falling off.’ We’re not going to rush these guys back. There’s no reason to rush him back.”
