MIAMI — A big night from John Mayberry Jr. helped the Phillies set a franchise record on Friday night.  Mayberry drove in three runs to push the Phillies past the Marlins, 5-3, before 21,659 at Sun Life Stadium. The victory put Philadelphia 42 games over .500 for the first time in franchise history.  “It’s an incredible feat,” Mayberry said.

Phils move team record 42 games above .500

Charlie Manuel is a man who doesn’t like to look ahead. The Phillies manager is all about the present. Win today’s game. Worry about tomorrow, tomorrow.  But Manuel made a departure from his normal way of doing business in Friday night’s historic 5-3 win over the Florida Marlins. Manuel was clearly looking at the season’s big picture when he let starting pitcher Roy Oswalt hit for himself with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth inning.

Phils waive Carpenter; Could be eying Rowand

The Phillies cleared a spot on their 40-man roster when pitcher Andrew Carpenter was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres on Friday.  “We needed some roster space – just in case,” said general manager Ruben Amaro Jr.  The Phillies 40-man roster now stands at 39. The team could fill the open spot in the coming days, either by activating pitcher Joe Blanton from the 60-day disabled list or by adding a player who has been let go by another organization.

MIAMI – Even if Charlie Manuel were forced to give a public reading of Charlie Sheen’s filmography, he might still find a way to avoid mentioning the word “platoon.”  So it should come as no surprise that he downplayed talk of such a situation in leftfield before last night’s game, when John Mayberry Jr. started for the 11th time in 12 games against a lefty starter.
