Phillies down Reds in Hamels’ return to mound

August 30 CSN Philly

Shane Victorino spoke for an entire organization and legions of Phillies fans after the team’s 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.  “Hopefully we can keep that Cole the rest of the way,” he said.  Victorino’s two-run homer in the eighth inning broke a 1-1 tie and helped propel the Phillies to their majors-best 84th victory, but the story of this night was Cole Hamels, and the smile on his face after the game, not to mention his efficient work on the mound, made it a feel-good story.

Mayberry still in Phils’ lineup as Ibanez heals

August 30 CSN Philly

John Mayberry Jr. got another start in left field for the Phillies on Monday night as Raul Ibanez continued to recover from a left groin injury.  “I thought about playing Raul,” manager Charlie Manuel said before the game against the Cincinnati Reds. “But I talked to [head athletic trainer] Scott Sheridan and he feels Raul needs to move around some in the outfield first. We want to see how he can run first.”

CINCINNATI – What you see is what you get. Unless it isn’t.  That, essentially, is where things stand with 48 hours to go before the Aug. 31 deadline to strike trades via baseball’s waiver process. Although the Phillies can use a lefthanded power bat for the bench and a lefthanded reliever for the bullpen, general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he “doubts” that he will be able to make a deal.  Because the Phillies have the best record in the majors, they are last on the waiver priority list

Phillies Notes: As deadlines approach, Amaro stands pat

August 30

CINCINNATI – The way Ruben Amaro Jr. sees it, his current 25 players are plenty energized for a stretch of 33 games in 31 days that began here Monday. Two days without baseball in Ohio were more than enough motivation for a return to the field.  And even with the option to acquire outside help by Wednesday’s waiver deadline and Thursday’s expansion of rosters, Amaro expects no changes to his roster.
