Cliff Lee began his 16th start of the season on Wednesday night by throwing seven straight balls.  Charlie Manuel, who has seen just about everything baseball can offer in nearly a half century in the pro game, exercised restraint in the Phillies dugout.  “I figured I better not jump up and take him out,” the manager said. “Let him work through it.”

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel has been none too subtle in expressing his wants around recent trade deadlines.  It was just last year when he said he wanted a starting pitcher – and a good one. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. delivered Roy Oswalt at the deadline.  Now Manuel wants a hitter.

The trade deadline is just 37 days away, and while the Phillies rest comfortably atop the National League East, manager Charlie Manuel isn’t sure the team should be resting on its laurels.  Manuel has made no secret in years past that his club needed to upgrade at the deadline, and that’s resulted in the arrivals of pitchers like Joe Blanton, Pedro Martinez, Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt.
