Phillies lethatrgic in 5th straight loss

September 22 Courier-Post

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel strongly believes that all is well, that the Phillies’ lackluster play lately can be explained away because his regular players are still resting and/or healing from injuries.  So Manuel endured the Phillies’ fifth straight loss, a 7-5 defeat to Washington on Wednesday.  He watched the top four hitters in the lineup go hitless in 16 at-bats.  And he saw another meltdown by Antonio Bastardo in the bullpen.

Hunter Pence on the bench until the weekend

September 22 Courier-Post

The Phillies aren’t expecting Hunter Pence to be available until the weekend after he was diagnosed with a mild strain of the patella tendon in his left knee. Pence hurt his knee while running out an infield single during the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. He stayed in the game until the sixth inning. He didn’t play in the nightcap, and had an MRI Wednesday, which confirmed the strain.

Nationals vs. Phillies: Danny Espinosa and Wilson Ramos lead Washington to win

September 22 Washington Post

A few players in the Washington Nationals clubhouse have discussed among themselves the possibility, more vividly alive each day, that they can finish with a record better than .500, the best since baseball returned to Washington. “It’s very reachable,” second baseman Danny Espinosa said.  The Nationals can afford to lose only once in their final seven games, but their recent surge and stunning takedown of the Philadelphia Phillies provides reason to ask: Why not?
