Oswalt tosses gem in Phillies’ win over Nationals

August 21 CSN Philly

Strangely enough, the rain storms that dealt the Phillies nearly five hours of delays and wreaked havoc on manager Charlie Manuel’s pitching staff over the previous two nights, just might have worked out in the end.  At least it appears that way for Roy Oswalt.  The Phillies’ starter, originally slated to pitch in Friday night’s series opener against the Nationals at Nationals Park, stretched, ran and warmed up only to get bumped when the delay went on for too long. Instead, Oswalt turned in his best performance of the season on Saturday night in the Phillies’ 5-0 victory.

Hamels eyeing Friday return vs. Fish

August 21 CSN Philly

By all accounts, it was a pretty good day for Phillies’ lefty Cole Hamels at Nationals Park on Saturday afternoon.  In fact, Hamels threw a light bullpen session under the watchful two eyes of pitching coach Rich Dubee and then adjourned back to the visitors’ clubhouse to relax and read a book and then declared to the local press that he likely will make his return to the rotation next Friday night at Citizens Bank Park when the Phillies play the Marlins.  Hamels had been scheduled to start on Friday night, but was skipped in the rotation when an MRI revealed a little inflammation in his left shoulder.

Jim Thome could be headed back to Phillies

August 21 Seattle Times

The Phillies, for all their strengths, could really use a left-handed power bat off the bench. And yes, that still holds true despite signing discarded Mariners DH Jack Cust to a minor-league contract.  Some buzz is starting to be heard that the Phillies could make a play for none other than Jim Thome, who recently hit his 600th home run. They have until Aug. 31 to make a waiver deal that would make him eligible for the postseason roster.  Thome, who played for the Phillies from 2003 to 2005, has never won a World Series (though he lost two with the Indians).
