It wasn’t as if Charlie Manuel expected Sunday night’s game to unfold the way it did, but needless to say, he wasn’t surprised. One night after the Phillies sewed up the NL East for the fifth season in a row and celebrated afterwards in the clubhouse with champagne, beer and expensive cigars, the team gave a “the day after” performance in the 5-0 loss to the Cardinals at the Bank.

Howard to have cortisone shot Monday

Charlie Manuel had most of his starters in the lineup for Sunday night’s game except for one noticeable absence…  The Big Piece.  Because he’s played most of September with a injured ankle, slugger Ryan Howard will likely have a cortisone shot on Monday. According to Manuel, the shot should clear out much of the inflammation.  “He’ll probably miss two or three games,” Manuel said. “That should help him some for the rest of the season.”

Remember back in August when we thought the Phillies and Giants were destined to meet up in the NLCS? Yeah, those were fun times.  Regardless, it’s interesting how quickly things changed in the standings in a short amount of time. Not only were the Giants seen as a lock to get to the playoffs, but so too did the Braves who spent most of the season with the second-best record in the National League.
