Ryan Madson was excused from Wednesday’s game to be with his wife as she prepared to give birth in Los Angeles. The Phillies kept this news under wraps until after the game because they did not want the Colorado Rockies to know that the hard-throwing closer was unavailable. Call it strategic secrecy. Madson’s absence actually set up a pretty neat storyline in the game. When Charlie Manuel needed someone to close out the Phils’ 8-6 win over the Rockies, he went to Brad Lidge.

Jogging in from the bullpen, Brad Lidge felt the weight of the moment. That’s a rare thing for the veteran closer. He’s spent years ignoring the circumstances in which he enters a game, shrugging off the implications of each pitch he throws. But Wednesday was different. Lidge threw 13 pitches in a perfect ninth inning, recording the 100th save of his Phillies career. But he only learned of that milestone after it was over.
