Phillies sweep Rockies, head for Giant rematch

August 4 CSN Philly columnist: Jim Salisbury

Ryan Madson was excused from Wednesday’s game to be with his wife as she prepared to give birth in Los Angeles. The Phillies kept this news under wraps until after the game because they did not want the Colorado Rockies to know that the hard-throwing closer was unavailable.  Call it strategic secrecy.  Madson’s absence actually set up a pretty neat storyline in the game. When Charlie Manuel needed someone to close out the Phils’ 8-6 win over the Rockies, he went to Brad Lidge.

Oswalt set to pitch Sunday for Phillies

The pain is gone. Roy Oswalt is eager to return to the Phillies’ rotation. He will do so Sunday in San Francisco.  “I’m tired of watching and ready to be part of it, for sure,” said the righthander, out since June 23 with a bulging disc in his lower back.  “It should be fun. I’d like to throw 10 shutouts in a row. I don’t know if it will happen, but I’m going to try.”

Lidge looks like old self in 9th inning

August 4 Camden Courier-Post

Jogging in from the bullpen, Brad Lidge felt the weight of the moment.  That’s a rare thing for the veteran closer. He’s spent years ignoring the circumstances in which he enters a game, shrugging off the implications of each pitch he throws.  But Wednesday was different.  Lidge threw 13 pitches in a perfect ninth inning, recording the 100th save of his Phillies career. But he only learned of that milestone after it was over.
