Worley, Phillies grab shutout win over Marlins

July 5 CSN Philly:

The knock on rookie pitcher Vance Worley was that he lacked the stamina to go deep into a ballgame. Whether it was mere growing pains or simply a matter of the kid getting his reps, Worley just was not gobbling up the innings like his teammates in the starting rotation.  Of course three of those guys are going to the All-Star Game with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee taking the top two spots in innings pitched in the National League, but nevertheless, Worley suffered in comparison.

Worley throws gem, gets demoted

July 5 Allentown Morning Call:

Vance Worley walked into the visitors’ clubhouse at Sun Life Stadium and headed for his locker because there was no reason to go anywhere else Monday. He had just thrown seven shutout innings in a 1-0 Phillies win over the Florida Marlins and the 23-year-old rookie had more immediate thoughts, such as: What’s for dinner?  So he did not see or hear Rich Dubee, the Phillies pitching coach, standing near Charlie Manuel’s office.  “Vanimal!” Dubee said. “Come here a minute.”

Shane Victorino to have thumb examined

July 5 Delaware County Times:

The injury woes continue to mount for the Phillies.  The team announced today that center fielder Shane Victorino will return to Philadelphia to have his ailing thumb examined.  In the meantime, they also called outfielder John Mayberry Jr. to the big club.”

Madson still unable to play

July 5 Camden Courier-Post:

There are no timetables in the Ryan Madson waiting game, only educated guesses. Monday marked yet another missed benchmark, and any hope that the closer might be on the mound again before the All-Star break seem to have all but vanished.  Madson was eligible to come off the 15-day disabled list Monday, after being shelved for the past three weeks with a sore hand. Instead he simply played a short game of catch. That will be the plan for at least another couple of days, and at this point pitching coach Rich Dubee is simply hoping Madson can throw off a mound by the All-Star break.
