Homers back Worley’s first complete game

July 27 phillies.com

PHILADELPHIAVance Worley pitched a career-high eight innings in the suffocating heat and humidity last week at Wrigley Field, and nobody wanted to see how he responded in his next start more than Phillies manager Charlie Manuel.  He responded just fine.  Worley pitched his first career complete game in Tuesday’s 7-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Citizens Bank Park, allowing just three hits, two runs and one walk and striking out five.

Utley’s trademark hustle evident on inside-the-parker

July 27 CSN Philly

Chase Utley always runs hard out of the batters’ box. That’s pretty much a given. There are certain things people can depend on in this life and they are death, taxes and the fact that Utley will play baseball as if his hair is on fire.  So as soon as his long shot off Giants pitcher Barry Zito caromed away from centerfielder Andres Torres near the 409-foot marker, it was obvious that Utley had a chance for an inside-the-park home run. At the very least, he was going to go for it.

For October’s sake, Amaro must deliver

July 27 CSN Philly columnist Jim Salisbury

The trade deadline is five days away and the pressure is on Ruben Amaro Jr.  You think being general manager of the best team in baseball is easy?  Think again.  The expectations that the Phillies carried into this season were huge and glowing. Now, they have raged to a boil and become even bigger and more intense.  The Phillies have racked up the best record in the baseball, they have won nine straight series and haven’t lost two games in a row since the first week of June. They have two Cy Young candidates and Chase Utley is driving the ball again.
