LAKELAND, Fla. — Brian Schneider’s three-run home run powered a four-run second inning off Rick Porcello, sending the Phillies on their way to a 5-3 win over the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium.
Porcello had tossed five shutout innings over his first two Spring Training starts, but after a scoreless first inning Wednesday, four consecutive hits put him in a deep hole. Raul Ibanez’s double past right fielder Brennan Boesch and back-to-back singles from Delwyn Young and Ross Gload plated one run and left two on for Schneider, who got a hanging sinker and drove it into the bullpen beyond the right-field wall for his first home run of the spring.
Porcello gave up four runs on six hits over three innings. Uncharacteristically, he gave up more fly balls than ground balls. Sidearming lefty Adam Wilk continued his solid spring with two scoreless innings before former Tiger Jeff Larish homered in the seventh off Duane Below.
Phillies starter Joe Blanton overcame a couple of early runs to last five innings, during which he allowed five hits, in his third Spring Training start. Ryan Madson, J.C. Romero and David Herndon tossed a scoreless inning apiece. Detroit’s Andy Dirks continued his torrid spring for the Tigers with two hits, raising his average to .500.
