— ESPN.com’s Buster Olney tweets that five teams are seriously pursuing Beltran – The Phillies, Red Sox, Giants, Braves and Rangers, with the Pirates and Indians pretty much out of the picture. The Mets previously considered the Giants the favorite but now other teams are making more of a push, meaning the Mets want other teams to up their offers.
— SI’s Jon Heyman reports that the Phillies, Giants, Braves, and possibly the Brewers are the most serious about Beltran. Of course, this is the same genius who advocated the Phillies trading Domonic Brown for Beltran so take any of his thoughts with a grain of salt the size of Oprah’s ass.
— Beltran himself spoke to David Lennon of Newsday, saying he would rather stay in the National League and doesn’t want to DH more than once per week. Beltran is also considering a team’s pitching staff when deciding whether to accept a deal, which obviously favors the Phillies.
— A Mets official told the New York Post’s Joel Sherman that there are as many as six or seven team actively pursuing Beltran.
So the Phillies appear to be seriously in the mix, maybe moreso than anyone else. It ultimately comes down to what they offer compared to other teams. Supposedly the Mets have been checking out Braves Triple-A pitching prospect Mike Minor so if the Phillies want Beltran bad enough they’re going to have to make the pot pretty sweet (just not with Dom Brown).
Of course, they could always move on from Beltran completely and focus their efforts on someone else, like Houston outfielder Hunter Pence.
