This time the Phils are linked to Kansas City Royals outfielder Melky Cabrera, most recently per FOX Sports’ Jon Paul Morosi. The rumor actually originated earlier this week from the Inquirer’s Phil Anastasia, who also linked the Phillies to two other Royals — outfielder Jeff Francouer and third baseman Wilson Betimit. The latter was just traded to the Tigers so that’s off the table, and Anastasia acknowledges that the only Royals player the Phillies have actually asked about is Cabrera.
But the interest in Cabrera is apparently pretty strong, with the teams exchanging names as part of a potential proposal. The 26 year-old is hitting .296 in 94 games this season, with 12 homers, 54 RBIs and an OPS of .793. Not bad. And like Beltran, Cabrera is a switch-hitter, which makes the Phillies lefty-heavy lineup problem much less of a concern. But unlike Beltran, Cabrera is under contract for next season so he would just be a late season rental.
Either way, it’s good to see some potentially serious interest by the Phillies in adding some offense to go with their incredible starting pitching.
