For those thinking the Phillies are done dealing after pulling off the fantastic Hunter Pence trade, think again.
The team has been rumored to be pursuing a relief option for the bullpen, such as the Padres’ Mike Adams and Heath Bell. That’s not a bad idea, with Adams a more likely option as Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. just made clear that he’s not a fan of rentals when discussing Carlos Beltran.
With that said, today Jayson Stark tweeted that the Phillies are not necessarily pursuing an arm but are looking to add some pop to their bench, saying a home run hitter like Jason Giambi could be a target. Stark also says the Phillies have even asked about fan-favorite Jim Thome.
Either one would be a nice get for the bench, especially Thome as he chases 600 home runs. He’s only four shy. It was a true sign of things to come when Thome was signed to that monster free agent deal in early 2003, the year before they opened Citizen’s Bank Park and presaged an almost unbelievable turnaround in the Phillies fortunes. It was a sad day to see him go. Bringing him back would be pretty awesome.
Regarding Giambi, ESPN’s Buster Olney tweets that there is no way the Rockies slugger clears waivers so if the Phillies want him they need to get him now.
